You can charge an EV from home using a Type 1 AC charger or use a Type 2 AC charger for faster charging and a third option of using a rapid charger at a charging station. As you may have guessed all three enable you to charge your EV at different speeds.

If you choose to charge your EV at home and use a Type 1 AC portable charger it will take you quite a while. The Tata Nexon EV for instance which comes with a 3.2 kW Type 1 AC charger takes approx. 9 – 10 hours to charge fully while the MG ZS EV which comes with a 3.9 kW Type 1 AC charger takes approx. 15 – 18 hours to slow charge fully from home. The difference in charging times is also because the MG ZS EV has a bigger battery.

EVs can also be charged with a Type 2 AC charger that allows you to plug it in almost anywhere and charge your car using the 220-volt AC Fast Charger which is installed by the company. (However, charging times also depend on the inverter of your EV i.e. how much maximum power it will take to charge.) When charged using a 7.4 kW Type 2 AC charger, it can take 7 – 8 hours to fully charge the MG ZS EV.

The third option available is rapid charging at charging stations. These are usually equipped with 50kW DC super chargers and allow an EV to charge from 0 up to 80% in under an hour.

For example, the Tata Nexon EV with its 30.2 kWh high energy density Lithium-ion battery takes about 1 hour to charge up to 80% using 50 kW DC fast charging at a public charging station.
