When making any purchase, it’s good to weigh the pros and cons. At the same time, one must bear in mind that the electric vehicle space is rapidly evolving and hence the technology is advancing just as swiftly. That said, at the moment, these are certain aspects that need to be worked upon when it comes to electric vehicles:

There are some Disadvantages of Electric cars :

Recharging the battery is time-consuming

It takes time to charge the battery of your EV. On an average, fast charging takes almost an hour to reach up to 80%. Also, it isn’t advisable to fast charge all the time. Slow charging depending on the EV could take more than 10 hours. It is evident that it takes longer to charge an EV than it takes to refuel Internal Combustion (IC) driven cars.

There isn’t good charging infrastructure just yet

Today, there definitely aren’t enough charging stations. However, the numbers are increasing as the demand for EVs rises. In fact, the government has planned to have charging kiosks at 69,000 fuel stations set up across the country. Further, some manufacturers have already made locating charging stations easy for EV owners – models like the Tata Nexon EV, MG ZE EV, Tata Tigor, and the Hyundai Kona, come equipped with a locator feature to find the nearest charging station.

Expensive as compared to IC cars

EVs are priced higher than conventional petrol or diesel powered cars. Take the
Tata Nexon EV for instance – the entry level Nexon EV comes for Rs.13.99 lacs as against its petrol and diesel counterparts which start at Rs.7.28 lacs and Rs. 8.58 lacs respectively (ex-showroom price Mumbai, as of August 2021).

There is of course a huge price difference. But one cannot possibly compare the two technologies since that would mean comparing two different products altogether.

While there are a few disadvantages of electric cars, the pros of owning an EV in India are increasingly outweighing the cons.

I hope we have cleared your doubts on the Disadvantages of Electric cars.
