EV charging infrastructure in India

It’s no secret that more and more Indians are inclined toward making the switch to electric vehicles. But charging infrastructure remains a cause for concern. Let’s look at some steps taken to improve the charging infrastructure in the country.

Setting up charging stations

The good news is that the government is pushing for the adoption of EVs. It has approved setting up 2,636 EV charging stations across 62 cities under the FAME II scheme (Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid & Electric Vehicles in India). So, you will be able to enjoy the convenience of charging your EV at many more locations.

You’ll see this trickle into every part of the country. Tata Power seems to be aggressively expanding its network of charging stations. Take a look at the Tata Power EZ charge app and you’ll see that they have more than 350 charging stations as of August 2021 across the country. The charging stations are located at prominent places in metros which gives EV owners the option to recharge from many locations.

MG Motors too is working to install public charging stations in India. The Company has partnered with Fortum Charge for the installation of public fast-charging stations.

Charging Kiosks at Petrol Pumps and public places

The Government is considering making it compulsory to install at least one charging kiosk across all company-owned, company-operated petrol pumps in India. Apart from this, MG Motors has partnered with Delhi-based eChargeBays for the installation of at-home charging systems. Other EV carmakers too offer customers installation of charging facilities at home.

As you can see, there is a huge expansion of charging infrastructure across the country. These are just some initiatives. So, if charging an electric vehicle is a cause for concern and you are putting away the decision to make the switch to electric, we hope we’ve put your worries to rest.
